How to Make a Dolly Out Real Estate Video

A dolly out starts close on the best thing in the room and pulls back until the whole room is around it. Buyers see the detail first and the context second, which is the order a good listing description uses too.

What the dolly out does

The camera pulls straight back from a detail until the whole room is in frame. Start on the detail and let the whole room open up around it.

Pulls back. Straight pull-back. Inside the app, every move also has a 3D preview of the rig and the exact photo map it asks for.

The direction and feel of dolly out, drawn on one sample photo — not a rendered clip. Villenza builds the real clip from your own three photos, opening on the first and landing on the last.

Best rooms for a dolly out

  • A kitchen with a hero island
  • A fireplace or built-in as the room's focus
  • A bedroom with a statement headboard
  • Any room where one detail sells the rest

The 3 photos to take

Take them in one visit, in the same light. The first photo is where the clip opens and the last is where it lands, so shoot them in the order the camera should travel.

  1. 1

    Close on the detail

Stand close and photograph the feature the clip should open on — the island, the mantel, the view.

  2. 2

    Halfway back

Step back half the distance and shoot the same feature with more room around it.

  3. 3

    The whole room

Stand at the back of the room and photograph all of it — this is where the pull-back finishes.

Tips for a better dolly out

  • Shoot the close photo tight enough that the detail fills the frame, but not so tight it is a texture.
  • Walk straight back; the three photos should sit on one line.
  • Take the wide photo from the back wall so the pull-back has somewhere to finish.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Pulling back into a hallway or doorway the middle photo never showed.
  • Changing height on the way back — keep the phone at chest height for all three.
  • A close photo that is a different subject from what the wide photo is centred on.

Not sure your photos will work? The AI Listing Planner reads a folder of photos, picks the move each room can support, and says what to re-shoot when a set won't work.

Questions

How many photos does a dolly out need?

3 photos of the same room: first close on the detail, then halfway back, last the whole room. Take them in one visit in the same light — the dolly out opens on the first and lands on the last.

Is a dolly out the same as a zoom out?

No. A zoom out changes the lens and keeps the camera still, so the perspective stays flat. A dolly out moves the camera, so the foreground and background separate as it goes — the room feels three-dimensional. Use the dolly out when there is real depth to show.

Is the dolly out included on every Villenza plan?

Yes — the dolly out, like every reveal move, is on every plan at the same 720p HD output; plans differ only in listings per month.
