How to Make a Boom Down Real Estate Video

A boom down starts high and wide — the whole room seen from above — and sinks to standing height. It shows the volume first and the living space second, and it is the shot a jib operator would charge a day rate for.

What the boom down does

The camera drops from high and wide down to eye level at the front of the room. Jib drops from ceiling height to eye level at the front of the room.

Drops and pushes in. Descend from high and wide. Inside the app, every move also has a 3D preview of the rig and the exact photo map it asks for.

Best rooms for a boom down

  • Double-height great rooms
  • Open-plan living with a high ceiling
  • Entrance halls with a gallery above
  • Rooms where the volume is the feature

The 3 photos to take

Take them in one visit, in the same light. The first photo is where the clip opens and the last is where it lands, so shoot them in the order the camera should travel.

  1. 1

    High and wide

Hold the camera as high as you can at the back of the room — a step or a pole helps — pointing down. This is the opening frame.

  2. 2

    Halfway down

Halfway down and halfway forward, the lens levelling out.

  3. 3

    Eye level, close

Standing height near the front of the room — where the boom finishes.

Tips for a better boom down

  • Get the high photo from a stair, a balcony or a pole; higher than your head is enough.
  • Point the phone down for the first photo and level it out by the last.
  • Keep the camera moving toward the room as it drops, not straight down.

Mistakes to avoid

  • A high photo taken from a different side of the room than the low one.
  • Dropping straight down without moving forward, which is a slide down.
  • A last photo aimed at the floor.

Questions

How many photos does a boom down need?

3 photos of the same room: first high and wide, then halfway down, last eye level, close. Take them in one visit in the same light — the boom down opens on the first and lands on the last.

How do I get the high photo without a jib?

A staircase, a mezzanine or a landing looking down works; so does a phone on a painter's pole or a monopod held up. The photo needs to be high and looking down over the room — it does not need to be perfect.

Is the boom down included on every Villenza plan?

Yes — the boom down, like every travel move, is on every plan at the same 720p HD output; plans differ only in listings per month.
